The UpStart Award is an annual award that supports emerging Victorian singer-songwriters and their career development. The award, a grant of $10,000 is privately funded by a Melbourne music-loving family.
The award is adjudicated by a panel of Victorian artists Adalita Srsen and Brooke Russell, plus industry experts from community radio, retail and streaming services. The winner is announced on The Breakfasters on Triple R FM in November.
“This wonderful encouragement and goodwill is vital to help nurture our artists who work so hard and are dedicated to their craft,” says Srsen. “I’m excited to hear what’s out there and can’t wait to learn all about our up and coming talent.”
“It’s so wonderful to see so much support and encouragement for young songwriters,” adds Russell. “I can’t wait to hear what Victoria has on offer in 2018.”
So whether you’re busking, recording a few tracks or playing pub nights, if you’re not on the map yet, this award could be yours. All you need to do is submit three songs or less, a bio describing your style and career, and – of course – a plan for how you’d use the $10,000 to further your music career.
The grant is only available to individual songwriters, however, it’s important to note that a songwriter from a band may submit an entry. For example, Jade McInally won last year’s award and fronts the band Jade Imagine.
“Receiving this award was a truly life-altering event,” shares McInally. “The Upstart Award made it possible for me to tour overseas to the U.S. and showcase at SXSW. Without that boost to the bank account, we definitely would not have achieved all we did”.
Applications are still open but close on August 31, so you’ll want to get your application in soon.
